--God helps those who hype the sons of RRC, but it’s easy when the work is this good. A bass player by rep, Wolff’s guileless vocal style suits these intimate portraits of characters struggling to speak truths others would rather not hear. The doo wop-accented tale of date rape, “Big Clumsy Hands,” and the secret life lived in the all-but-whispered “Quietly” take the intimacy to its most vulnerable places. The rocking album closer, “I-95”, fights for what “matters to me” no matter how the world wants to damp that down. As on so many fine records, that closing fight adds another level of meaning to the album opener, “A-Sides,” a Jersey Shore rocker that insists, “Turn it up a little bit louder, turn it up, turn it up, TURN IT UP!” -Dave Marsh and Danny Alexander

Track Name: A Sides
A SIDES

I ain't felt good in so long,
I can't remember what it's like,
Since I'm not sure I'll have to take your word,
I'm feelin it tonight.

Grab me as hard as you can now,
Maybe together we can find the key,
That special thing we're all convinced,
Separates the "them" from the "you and me"

Turn it up a little louder,
Right now we're playing all the a sides
I'll do my best not to talk about her,
Cause tonight it feels alright just being alive.

Hold back your tears,
For a few more years,
You'll see the little things don't add up.
Take your pills and pay your bills,
It all don't amount to much.
Man those things that used to make you smile,
Now you need 'em just to get through the day,
You're the great pretender and it's hard to remember,
Feeling any other way.

Turn it up a little louder,
Right now we're playing all the a sides
I'll do my best not to talk about her,
Cause tonight it feels alright just to be alive.
Tonight it feels alright just being alive

Melodrama from night til dawn,
Hyperbole from here to the door,
It's been a good year for the roses,
Been a good year for walking the floor.

Turn it up a little bit louder,
Turn it up a little bit louder,
Turn it up, turn it up, turn it up

Cause tonight it feels alright just being alive.
Cause tonight it feels alright just to be alive.
Cause tonight it feels alright just being alive.
Track Name: Plan On It
PLAN ON IT

I've built my life,
Brick by brick,
All the corners smooth and all the pieces fit,

Every decision has been weighed against the odds,
A whole damn room,
Full of countless clicking clocks.

You make me want to tear the whole thing down,
Pull out the struts and raise it to the ground,
Stand up on my toes and close my eyes,
If you plan on it it comes as no surprise.

I thought I'd built,
The place with space for two,
A room for me,
And enough room for someone like you,

But now I know,
That it don't work like that,
You gotta scrap it all,
And build it all from scrap.

And you make me wanna,
Tear the whole thing down,
Pull out the struts,
and raise it to the ground,
Stand up on my toes,
And close my eyes,
If you plan on it,
It comes as no surprise,
If you plan on it it comes as no surprise.
Track Name: Big Clumsy Hands
BIG CLUMSY HANDS

Big clumsy hands,
Used to hold hers up to his.
Felt as safe as they could be
And all that she,
Needed were his fingertips.

They were walking in a daze,
Just couldn't believe their luck,
They could make each other smile,
Even for a little while
and that was all it took.

But woa oh,
The first time's always tough,
Trying to figure out,
When enough means enough,
Don't believe your parents,
They donn't remember how it was,
They'll just tell you woa oh oh oh,
To be young and in love.

They'd go driving after school,
Get the keys to moms old car,
And they burned a lot of gas,
But they never went too fast,
And they never got too far.

Til the fire in his gut,
Stopped listening to his head,
Couldn't hear her saying no,
Please go slow,
Couldn't hear a word she said.

But woa oh,
The first times always tough,
Trying to figure out but it never seems enough,
Don't believe your parents,
They don't remember how it was,
They'll just tell you woa oh oh,
To be young and in love.

There was blood on the seats,
And tears in her eyes,
But his were shut tight
Couldn't tell it wasn't right,
she just looked away and cried.

He started up the car,
Drove her back to her house,
She didn't say a word,
As he walked her to the curb,
So he kissed her on the mouth.

But woa oh the first time's always tough,
Trying to figure out,
When enough means enough,
Don't believe your parents,
They don't remember how it was,
They'll just tell you woa oh oh,
To be young and in love.
Track Name: Do Things Twice
DO THINGS TWICE

Hey young man,
Don't look so sad,
You got things your dad never had,

The things that came before,
All the lessons laid at the door,
Like the mailman brings the mail,
How could it fail

The words the sights the sounds,
A thousand ships all run aground,
Just to put a smile on your face,
It aint a waste, can't be a waste.

Think of all the lives that end in a ditch,
Just tryna explain the way we live,
The places it went wrong,
Written down in a book or a song,
Just for you to hear,
Making it clear.

And brother ain't it nice,
That we get to do things twice,
Make the same mistakes they did,

Like the coyote on the screen,
We don't learn from things we've seen,
And we never catch that,
Goddamn stupid, useless, piece of shit bird.

Meep Meep.

If I could shut my eyes I could see it,
If I could shut my mouth I could hear it.

The words the sights the sounds,
A thousand ships all run aground,
Just to put a smile on my face,
Can't be a waste.
Won't be a waste.
Track Name: He Ain't Blind
HE AIN'T BLIND

Man you've grown,
I bet you don't remember me,

I been gone,
so much longer than I meant to be,

Sure it's fun,
You wanna race? First one to the store,

I'll keep up,
I'll use my arms, it's what the chair is for.

No Tina it's alright,
What are we trying to hide?

He'd see it soon enough,
For god's sake he ain't blind.

I'm not mad
I just get turned around sometimes.

Mom's alright
She don't like when I talk that loud inside.

No Tina it's alright,
What are we trying to hide?

He'd see it soon enough,
For gods sake he ain't blind.

It's not your fault,
Your mom just thinks I need some time alone.

I hope soon little man,
But could you put her on the phone?

No Tina it's alright,
What are we trying to hide?

He'd see it soon enough,
For gods sake he ain't blind.
Track Name: Bullpen
BULLPEN

I came up right here in Boston.
Born after dad went overseas.
He played baseball for the army,
But not as well as the Japanese.

That left mom with me and Derek.
She taught me to throw with dads old mitt,
Remember I used to cross over the Charles to play some stickball,
Man I'd strike out all those college kids.

Got called out of class by a recruiter,
Offered me a spot in a double a club,
So I left mom at home with Derek.
And traded my books for a seat on a bus.

I played before the pitch counts mattered.
When the DL meant something was broke,
Man, got soreness in your shoulder?
Take two parts rum to one part coke.

When Boston asked coach for a righty,
He said I was the best he'd ever seen,
I said coach you mean it you really think so,
He said "Son don't think, it weakens the team."

Another stumble in through center,
Mom and Derek in the stands.
I crawl out through the lockers,
And drive my car over a fan.

The front office said I wasn't worth it.
They said so long and fare thee well,
I sit in my driveway in my corvette,
They won't let me drive and I won't never sell.

Bought a bar out in Cambridge,
Selling beers to those college punks,
Keeping it down 'til 2 am when I kick out,
All the same old tired drunks.

Dad's body died before his spirit,
Half a world away from home,
I'm pouring cocktails for tourists.
They say "Hey didn't you used to be Sam Malone?"
Track Name: Flowers
FLOWERS

I got two more mouths than I need...
And a car that stalls and a roof that leaks
And a job that keeps me staring at the clock

When I come home the house's a mess,
Two full grown boys who ain't no kind of help,
And ugliest goddamn garden on the block.

But I planted flowers down on my hands and knees,
Trimmed them and watered every day,
Problem with flowers, they do just as they please,
And when winter comes you can never make them stay.

I sold the comb he bought for me,
In that nice Jap box from overseas,
Now I hold it back with a piece of thread,

I got a job the day he left,
Dont let no one say I can't take care of myself,
And I finally get some sleeping done in bed.

But I planted flowers down on my hands and knees,
Trimmed them and watered every day,
Problem with flowers, they don't do what you need,
And end up in the garbage anyway.

Hey mister don't call me tough,
Keep it down for heavens sake,
Every time someone tells me,
Look how "resilient" you can be,
It's an invite to see how much I might could take.

But I planted flowers down on my hands and knees,
Trimmed them and watered every day,
Problem with flowers, they do just as they please,
And when winter comes you can never make them stay.
And they end up in the garbage anyway.
Track Name: Quietly
QUIETLY

Out in the yard,
Mom says quietly,
Can't you play quietly,
Christ your father's home.

So I take off,
Down to the library,
Where folks don't stare at me,
For always being alone.

Christ how'd they know
A hundred years ago,
Strong arms holding other arms,
So much like my own,

Flashlights and socks,
Secrets with Johnny,
My Dorian Grey and me,
Even between the sheets.

Keep it down,
So that Sam don't see,
What it does to me,
The way that my heart beats.

Christ,
They don't need to know,
The places that I go,
Strong arms, holding other arms,
So much like my own.

Seems like we talk a lot these days.
Ain't enough to be proud gotta be a parade.
And the world we built quietly,
Is there for all to see, whether we like it or not.

Big empty house,
Its just the dog and me,
Folks say "He's lonely, mmhm it makes you sad."

But everyday,
My friend visits me.
Two old men for tea sure don't sound so bad.
Track Name: I-95
I - 95

After dark on I 95
Metal and plastic swerving by,
In the oily night,
Taillights fade out of view.

A window goes down,
In the car up ahead,
And a cigarette streaks out,
Orange and red,
And the way it explodes,
As it hits the road is too good to be true.

You don't care anymore,
Don't feel me like you did before,
I know you can't hear but brother can you see,
Why it mattered to me,
It mattered to me,
It mattered to me
It mattered.

Two kids heads form a silhouette,
On a bright cartoon on a tv set,
While mom and dad stare ahead,
At the lines in the street.

That cigarette has already burned itself out,
I know paper and ashes ain't worth talking about,
But I never planned on life,
Feeling this incomplete.

You don't care anymore,
Don't feel it like you did before,
I know you can't hear but brother can you see,
Why it mattered to me,
It mattered to me,
It mattered to me,
It mattered.

And the sparks in the road,
Burn too hot to hold,
Still see 'em every time I close my eyes,
Here in the dark,
All we've got are sparks,
Let us know we're still alive.
I'm still alive,

And that matters to me,
It matters to me,
It matters to me,
It matters.
